One Palm at a Time

Big Kahuna Tiki Huts has a select group of thatchers with many years of experience in thatching and rethatching tiki (chickee) huts. After the structure of a tiki hut is built by the construction crew, the next phase of completing the tiki hut is to thatch the top of each hut with fresh cut palm fronds. During the summer, the crew gets an early start, as the midday sun can be brutal. Lots of water and lots of breaks are required.

Once notified that a hut is ready for thatching, the thatching crew will spend hours cutting fresh cut palm fronds in preparation for their job. They load their trailer with the palm fronds, which can be hundreds or thousands depending on the size of the hut they will be thatching. Once they have enough palms, they must get to their job site within a day or two, as the palms are applied to the hut soon after they are cut.

The thatchers start at the bottom of the tiki hut around the edges and work their way up to the top. Once the huts are thatched, depending on the type and size, they may apply rolled roofing and crossbars or roping around a single pole to finish the hut. Some of our customers prefer to have a cupola on top of their hut. A cupola is a domelike structure that sits on the top of the tiki hut and is covered with palms.
